The root of the word Iris is derived from the Greek word meaning “rainbow” and “messenger.” The Greek goddess Iris is said to have appeared in the form of a rainbow, delivering divine messages from the gods to mortals. In Europe, the iris also became a symbol of the French monarchy (fleur-de-lys).
Irises (Iridaceae) are native to Southern Europe and have become naturalized in Iran and northern India. The fresh root has an earthy smell, but after two years of drying, a violet scent appears, which intensifies with longer maturation.
