Its Latin name comes from the Greek word melittena , meaning bee, because they were cultivated as honey plants. According to ancient legends, lemon balm helps with heart and nervous problems and removes melancholy. The famous medieval physician Paracelsus called it ” the elixir of life ” because it promoted longevity.
