Vanilla is a species of orchid that originates from southeastern Mexico. As one of the few representatives of orchids, it produces a so-called vanilla pod and is the only orchid with an edible fruit! The Aztecs called it “tlilxóchitl” or “black flower”. It first reached Europe around 1500. The Spanish brought it as a promising perfume. After Cortez’s conquest of the Aztec Empire (1519) and his return to Spain, the culinary magic of this aromatic fruit was also revealed. French vanilla is called “Bourbon” because its first cultivation by the French began on the island of Reunion, which at the time was called “Bourboun”. Until the end of the 19th century, Mexico held the first place in the world’s vanilla production.
