At this time, a very popular wine from a more expensive variety of so-called Muscatel (a wine made from muscat grapes). Experienced German buyers, however, were not lazy and came up with a rather clever innovation – they mixed local Rhine wines with Clary Sage Flower Water and elderflower. And hence the historical name of “Muscatel sage”.

Its botanical name – Salvia sclarea – is based on the Latin “clarus” meaning pure, as it was traditionally used in the Middle Ages to treat eye problems. In shamanic cultures, alchemists and healers, its aroma is said to cause “visionary vision”. The generic name Salvia is from “salvere”, meaning “to save” or “to heal”. The ancient Romans considered it a “Herba sacra”, a holy plant that ensured longevity.
