This wild growing peony with bright red flowers comes from the Balkans . It is found in Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania and Serbia, where it grows in light deciduous forests and meadows. The coral-red color of their petals is caused by the pigment cyanidine, which appears only sporadically in other species. At 16 century it was brought from Constantinople (today’s Istanbul) and labeled as Paeonia femina byzantica. In Czech, it is referred to as foreign/common/Balkan peony. It is used for crossing new species to obtain coral red colored flowers.
