Rock rose is a creeping herb with hairy white flowers originating from the eastern Mediterranean, especially the Greek islands, such as Crete. Its Latin name is derived from the Greek word “kístē” (box), for the specific distribution of the seeds of this herb. This aromatic treasure, often referred to as “labdanum” (ladanum, ladan or ladanom), has been used by mankind for ritual ceremonies since ancient times. The famous Greek historian Herodotus recorded how in his time a sticky resin-like labdanum substance was collected from the fur of grazing animals. Shepherds combed it from the fur of their goats as soon as the animals were fed. It was then used in various ointments, which is also written about by the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates. For combing, they used a special wooden tool called a lambadistrion (from the word labdanum-gatherer). Today, this sticky mass is separated by boiling twigs and leaves, or using a special rake-like tool.
