Characteristics of Clary Sage – feminine, soothing, balancing

Smell – It boasts a very pleasant and delicate smell, reminiscent of the aroma of Earl Gray tea with a strong citrus finish, similar to bergamot. As a feminine herb, it harmonizes.

Wines, liqueurs and vermouths are traditionally flavored with it. The roots of this practice go back to Germany in the 16th century. At this time, a very popular wine from a more expensive variety of so-called Muscatel (a wine made from muscat grapes). Experienced German buyers, however, were not lazy and came up with a rather clever innovation – they mixed local Rhine wines with Clary Sage flower water and elderflower. And hence the historical name of “Muscatel sage”.
