Collection and production of peppermint oil

Mint is ideally harvested after eight o’clock in the morning during sunny days. For maximum yield it is necessary that it is in the flowering phase (Ideally 50% of the flowers are in bloom). At this point, the plant has the highest amount of essential oil. The harvested mint is allowed to dry on the slopes and then weighed into a distillery. From the harvest e.g. agricultural area 1000 m 2 (or 0.1 hectare), 3-5 kg of essential peppermint oil are obtained after the steam distillation process. The richest part of the essential oil are the flowers, which contain 4-6%. Up to 2.5% is deposited in the leaves and only 0.3-0.4% of the essential oil is present in the stalks. The main part of peppermint oil is menthol, some varieties reach up to 45%. Menthol is an ingredient that is isolated for its effects and becomes part of many drugs and medicines. It is contained in nasal drops, migraine drugs, preparations for the treatment of the cardiovascular system.

Massage oils mixed with peppermint oil have a cooling effect due to the natural content of menthol. Menthol acts on nerve endings that perceive heat. In practice, this means that the initial cooling effect will be followed by the so-called heating effect. Thanks to the menthol present, the mint essential oil also has an anticonvulsant effect. In The Healing Inntelligence of Essential Oils (p. 170), Kurt Schnaubelt mentions its excellent anticonvulsant effect on the digestive tract and its role in controlling bacteria such as Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, E.coli, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and others. Its effects are really very strong.
