Why it is also called “Muscatel sage”
Clary Sage is a noble aromatic plant up to 100 cm high, which is grown mainly for the needs of perfumery, cosmetics and food industry. Its hydrosol traditionally flavors wines, liqueurs and vermouths. The beginnings of this practice can be found in Germany 16. century. At this time, a very popular wine from a more expensive variety of so-called Muscatel (a wine made from muscat grapes). Experienced German buyers, however, were not lazy and came up with a rather clever innovation – they mixed local Rhine wines with Clary Sage flower water and elderflower. And hence the historical name of “Muscatel sage”.
Aroma of flower water
Although it is grown for the needs of male perfumery (where its essential oil is useful), it is a typical “female herb”. Regenerates, calms, harmonizes and strengthens. It is one of the hydrolates that stimulates for good mood. Some even consider it an aphrodisiac. It boasts a very pleasant and tender aroma, reminiscent of the aroma of Earl Gray tea with a distinctive citrus finish, similar to bergamot.
Skincare
It is ideal for dry, dehydrated and tired skin. Due to its antioxidant and strengthening effects, it is recommended as a prevention of skin aging. Thanks to its astringent effects, it also helps oily skin with enlarged pores.

This hydrisol both smells and tastes. Aromatic tea with a bitter bergamot finish, exactly as stated by S. Catty in his book “Hydrosols the Next Aromatherpy”. It can be used mainly in cold cooking and beverage preparation. It beautifully complements the taste of seasonal fruit in summer sorbets. It aroma of white wine punches and is very pleasant even in a martini.

The resulting taste is somewhat pronounced, slightly bitter, strongly herbal, with a warm finish.
Our tip is a relaxing hot bath with one tablespoon of Clary Sage and one tablespoon of lavender water. It soothes the skin and the resulting scent relieves tension and worries.
